You may not even realize this, but Jesus speaks of money more than of heaven and hell combined, perhaps more than any singular topic. In fact, 11 of the 39 parables that Jesus teaches are on the topic of money and finances.

Finances often trigger anxiety and stress. From what I’ve experienced, I’ve realized: my worry was not fixing my financial situation and I belong to Jesus and He is taking care of me.
Today, I want to share five over-arching heart principles on money and finance:
- God cares about you, which is why he cares about your money. God does not lack resources, He does not need your money. God knows what money does to you both in a negative and a positive way, so He is concerned about your financial situation. He cares about not only what you do with money, but how you are with money.
- Money is important because it reveals who you are. This does not just refer to status. Status in the world has no meaning in the eyes of God and does not reflect character. Money reveals a person’s character and identity. In Jesus’ parable of Lazarus and the rich man, it is the poor man Lazarus who is given a name – an identity – and not the rich man of high status in the society. Check your attitude towards money and what it reveals about you.
- Figure out your why before your what. When it comes to your money situation, ask yourself what your motivation is first. If you don’t have a significant enough why, you’re never going to make the necessary changes. Have positive motivations for improving your finances – maybe you want to live more generously or you want to live more simply and have emotional freedom when it comes to thinking about money.
- Money is either a tool or a master. Is money the controlling force in your life or can you use it as a tool?
- The 4 C’s of your relationship with money:
-
- Casualness. You should not have a casual relationship with money. If you do, you are going to get swayed by whatever comes your way and you probably won’t achieve many of your financial goals.
- Crisis. Don’t be ruled by crisis. When it comes to money, you go into crisis when you don’t have a solid plan and your wants and expenditures are beyond your means.
- Comparison. Try not to compare what everyone else has to what you have.
- Contentment. You have the choice of having the ruling philosophy of contentment in your life. Know that you have Jesus and you will always have Him no matter what else comes and goes.
Jesus says, where your treasure is, there your heart will be. Reflect on this: if somebody were to look at your bank account and your purchase history over the last several months or years, where would they say your heart is?
